Republic of Ireland midfielder Alan Browne tested positive for Covid-19, the FAI announced in a statement this morning.

The Preston North End player was featured in Ireland’s 3-0 loss to England at Wembley last night.

The FAI confirmed there were no close contacts of the player and the rest of the team tested negative ahead of the Republic of Ireland’s game against Wales in Cardiff on Sunday.

Browne has been isolated from the rest of the group under Covid-19 protocols, and both the HSE and UEFA have been informed.

Browne is the fourth member of the senior team to test positive since early October, with Derrick Williams and Jack Byrne ruled out last month, while forward Callum Robinson’s test came back positive on Tuesday.

Stephen Kenny’s side has been hit hard by Covid-19 related issues in the past two international windows.

Browne had been one of four players, along with John Egan, Callum Robinson and Callum O’Dowda, excluded from the October Nations League games against Wales and Finland because of their close contact with Williams.

Three days earlier, forwards Aaron Connolly and Adam Idah were excluded from the decisive Euro 2020 play-off against Slovakia, as close contacts with an FAI official who tested positive, which later turned out to be a false, were considered. positive.
