Kevin McStay says Aidan O’Shea was virtually “nondescript” in May’s excellent display against Galway in the Allianz Football League.

Mayo gave his Division 1 survival chances a timely boost by beating his rivals Connacht by 15 points, scoring three goals in the process and building a 2-17-0-07 lead at the break.

Speaking at RTÉ’s Allianz League SundayMcStay reserved praise for O’Shea’s performance in the full attack line.

“Today’s exhibit is anchored and based on Aidan O’Shea’s positioning at 14,” he said.

“If he’s selected, positioned, and used what’s most important, he doesn’t really stand out sometimes.

“Today was not remarkable. He is fit, he is hungry, he is committed. He has had a short enough club season, he is the captain of the team and I have been saying this for the last few weeks, he is in very good shape.

Pat Spillane, who added that Mayo used O’Shea well with long diagonal passes in his direction, was impressed by the way Mayo attacked in the opening period as they dismantled Galway’s defensive ranks.

“His performance in the first half was the best performance of the first half that I have seen of any game over the weekend,” he said, also praising Mark Moran’s performance.

“It was brilliant football, attacking football at its finest. They created 21 chances, made 19 of 21. It was a wonderful 35 minutes of football.”
