ADDITIONAL GARDAÍ have been drafted for Dublin and specific checkpoints will be erected across the county as residents of the capital are asked to adhere to new restrictions to stop the spread of Covid-19.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin announced this afternoon that Dublin will move to Level three of coronavirus restrictions for a period of three weeks starting at midnight tonight. The new measures include restrictions on meetings, travel and visits to private homes.
Once Tier Three takes effect, Gardaí will restart Operation Fanacht in the county with specific patrols and checkpoints to monitor compliance with public health measures.
There will be a high level of visibility of the garda on foot, in cars and by bicycle to monitor social distancing and gatherings of people in the amenities and open spaces. Specific checkpoints will also be established throughout the county.
The force in Dublin will be supplemented by officers from the surrounding counties who will focus on patrols of the destination’s public services and open spaces.
Gardaí is reminding people that they are advised not to travel in or out of Dublin unless absolutely necessary.
The force said officers will use the three E’s (Engage, Educate and Encourage) approach to promote compliance with guidelines and regulations. Execution will only be used as a last resort.
“As a community, we must all come together to once again protect ourselves and the most vulnerable,” said Deputy Commissioner John Twomey.
It is vital that each person do their part and adhere to public health regulations and guidelines to reduce the increasing spread of Covid-19.
Deputy Commissioner Twomey added that local Gardaí are available to support vulnerable people during this time. “If you feel isolated or need help shopping, picking up your prescription or anything else similar, contact your local Garda station,” he said.
