A COUPLE believed to have died in a murder-suicide was killed by a single bullet accidentally fired with a weapon they were both holding.
The engaged couple, identified by Southampton police as Jonathan Fava, 25, and Kelly Lynn Bray, 24, were shot dead on March 4, in what is now called an accident.
Last Thursday, Southampton City Police Chief Steven Skrynecki said an investigation revealed that their deaths did not involve homicide or suicide, The Southhampton Press reported.
He explained: “The evidence supports that a single shot was fired and that that single shot took the lives of two people.”
An investigation by county police and city police found that Jonathan and Kelly believed that the Glock semi-automatic pistol was unloaded when they were holding it.
Chief Skrynecki said: “We cannot determine whether that trigger was intentionally or accidentally pulled.”
“In any case, it was considered an accidental shot, because even an intentional trigger probably involved a weapon believed to be unloaded.”
Authorities arrived at the couple’s home just before midnight on Wednesday, March 4, after receiving a call from a “distraught” woman at the home who claimed to have been shot.
Jonathan and Kelly were declared dead at the scene after they were allegedly killed almost instantly.
According to local authorities, they found their 18-month-old baby safe in another room at the couple’s home in Hampton Bays, Long Island.
Skrynecki revealed various weapons, including long rifles, a pistol, and bows and arrows were found in the house.
Speaking about the weapons found, the chief said that permission is not required for a long rifle.
However, neither Jonathan nor Kelly had a permit for the gun.
“This is a tragic event that highlights the dangers of alcohol consumption when handling weapons,” Skrynecki said at the press conference last Thursday.
Forensic evidence at the scene, the Suffolk medical examiner’s report and an interview with a woman who was at the house during the shooting led investigators to their conclusion.
They determined that the single shot, found at the scene, passed through Jonathan and Kelly.
The person believed to have fired the weapon has not been released.
“What is related to the investigation was criminality. It is not necessarily going to give us a perfect image,” Skrynecki said.
It was previously revealed that Jonathan Fava had been arrested in 2015 for shooting at houses and animals while also arresting drivers with his gun.
