A graduated system of fines will be drawn up for violating Covid-19 rules

THE COVID-19 CABINET subcommittee agreed to draft gradual fines for non-compliance with coronavirus regulations.

The government will introduce a proportional system, which could include fines of 50 euros on the spot. The laws will now be drafted by Health Minister Stephen Donnelly and Justice Minister Helen McEntee.

The prospect of a gradual penalty system was raised at the Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting Tuesday night.

A meeting of the cabinet subcommittee on Covid-19 tonight considered whether fines should be introduced to enforce regulations.

Medical Director Dr. Tony Holohan and Deputy Medical Director Dr. Ronan Glynn left the government buildings tonight after briefing the committee.

NPHET wrote to the government last night to tell it that it remains deeply concerned about the ongoing increase in Covid-19 cases, but did not recommend further restrictions.

There are currently fines of up to € 2,500 for violating pandemic regulations, such as hosting a meeting or not covering your face on public transport.

One idea being considered for the incremental fines is a € 50 fine on the spot for not wearing a face mask or leaving your county during restrictions.
