He told Independent.ie “Many people wear disposable gloves in everyday life.

“So one of our key messages this year for Hand Hygiene Day is that we don’t recommend wearing gloves when shopping or on the go.

“If there are bugs in the gloves, those bugs often end up on the hands when you remove the gloves and from there they can easily end up in the mouth, nose and eyes.

“It is much better to wash your hands regularly and properly. Even in special settings like hospitals where gloves are valuable, you still need to do hand hygiene when you remove the gloves.”

“In hospitals, gloves are single-use for single-patient care tasks.”

HAND HYGIENE DAY

He explained that most years, when it’s Hand Hygiene Day, people wonder how they can find a new way to talk to others about the importance of hand hygiene to prevent infection.

Today is World Hand Hygiene Day and the coronavirus remains a major threat to public health.

Martin added: “This year everything is very different. Preventing Covid-19 infection is now on everyone’s mind. “

The HSE website says, “Don’t wear disposable gloves instead of washing your hands. The virus infects them the same way as your hands. Also, your hands can become contaminated when you remove them.”

“Disposable gloves are used in medical settings. They are not as effective in daily life.”

They say wearing disposable gloves can give you a false sense of security, as you can sneeze or cough into gloves, get contaminated by removing gloves or touching surfaces, or not washing your hands as much and touching your face with contaminated gloves.
