The Irish ambassador to the United States has defended the presence of American pharmaceutical companies in Ireland as “beneficial” to both nations.
Aniel Mulhall made the comments after the US President. USA promise to return the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals to the United States.
Donald Trump specifically referred to Ireland and China in his comments, commenting: “We all manufacture our drugs except us.”

He said he wants to bring pharmaceutical manufacturing to the United States.
“We are recovering the entire supply chain,” he told Fox News at a virtual city hall event in Washington DC.
Ambassador Mulhall responded on Twitter, saying that there are more than 750 US companies with investments in Ireland from where they export to the EU and beyond, adding that supply chains have continued to function during the pandemic.
“The profits of these companies benefit the United States economy. The supply chains between #Ireland and #USA for pharmaceutical and medical products have remained fully functional during # COVID-19,” he wrote on Twitter.
The ambassador added in another tweet: “The presence of US pharmaceutical companies in #Ireland is of great value to those companies as they can access the EU and other duty-free markets from Ireland.
“That is ultimately for the significant benefit of the United States economy.”
President Trump has previously spoken about American companies moving operations from foreign countries to the United States.
