Firefighters have been called into action to control another fire at Dublin’s historic Belcamp University Building.
Units from the ublin fire brigade (DFB) of Kilbarrack, North Strand and their downtown headquarters are dealing with a major fire at Belcamp College.
Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after 9 p.m. and they are still trying to control a large fire that started on the second floor of the building but has since spread to other higher floors.
.
Five units attend, including a revolving ladder, extending 30 m and the DFB Environmental Unit containing a large water tank.
The DFB district officer is also on the scene.
“The upper floors are well lit. There is visible smoke in the area,” DFB tweeted.
“We are using a revolving ladder as a water tower, pumping water through the windows onto the fire floors.”
The building has been abandoned for some time, and DFB currently understands that there have been no related injuries or people present in the building.
The historic university was built in the 1770s, designed by Kilkenny-born architect James Hoban.
The architect, who also designed the White House in Washington, installed a similar oval room in the Dublin 17 building, which was destroyed in a previous fire.
The building is listed as of great historical value, as the Oblate Fathers founded the Catholic University as a boarding school there in 1893, and after two fires last July, a Taisce called the Fingal County Council to protect the building from the side north.
The former university has been the subject of several arson attacks in the past, but DFB said the origins of this fire are currently unknown.
