Funding for rapid test as fears raised over Covid-19 testing for mental health staff

QUEEN’S University Belfast has received funding to develop a rapid diagnostic test for Covid-19.

The trial is aimed at finding a highly accurate test which can show results within an hour, eliminating the need to send tests to a laboratory.

Meanwhile, the Mental Health Commission has claimed “major inconsistencies” still remain in testing of mental health staff for Covid-19.

It said that while a number of services were now reporting that staff testing was planned, others reported that they were still waiting to hear about testing.

And Irish coronavirus hospital patient numbers continue to fall.

At 8pm on Sunday, 665 confirmed coronavirus cases and 241 patients suspected to have the virus were in hospitals here, down from a total of 950 the day before.

93 confirmed Covid-19 cases are being treated in Irish ICUs and 20 suspected coronavirus cases are in critical care units, latest HSE figures say.
