Roma head coach Paulo Fonseca is desperate to keep Manchester United defender Chris Smalling on loan for at least another season.

Harry Maguire’s arrival as the world’s most expensive defender last summer left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a bloated squad and Smalling, 30, was allowed to come out on a one-year loan contract.

Smalling has shone in Serie A to the point that his career in England seems to be revived, with Gareth Southgate heading to Rome to see a defender who seemed to have an almost ruled out discard.

Solskjaer has spoken of his expectation that Smalling will return to United in form next season, but Roma boss Fonseca hopes to keep him in Italy.
