A driver was rescued after his car plunged into the water on a popular North Dublin beach tonight.

The dramatic scenes unfolded on Dollymount Strand shortly after 6pm.

Emergency services, including the Dublin Coast Guard and Fire Brigade, rushed to the site where the Wooden Bridge in Clontarf was temporarily closed.

They managed to get the motorist out of the car, who was taken to the hospital but fortunately did not suffer serious injuries.

The Howth Coast Guard said: “The Howth Coast Guard was assigned by the Dublin MRCC at 18:21 to a report of a car in the water at Dollymount near the wooden bridge.

The team responded together with the Dublin Fire Brigade, the National Ambulance Service (NAS) and An Garda Siochana.

“The driver was taken out of the car, treated on the spot and taken to the hospital. There were no serious injuries.”

The Dublin Fire Brigade has been contacted for comment.
