The Late Late Show returned this week for a very special episode to mark Daffodil Day.

Ryan Tubridy welcomed a host of guests to the special show which was aimed at helping raise money for the Irish Cancer Society.

Among those who sat down with Tubs this week was Westlife star Shane Filan, who spoke very openly about how cancer has affected his life.

The boy band star spoke very openly about the good work of the charity and boldly opened up about the tragedy of losing both of his parents to cancer.

And he did not skimp on details when talking about his mother’s exhausting battle with the disease, telling Tubridy: “My mum liked to get on the bus … she used to take him to Galway for treatment, there were 3 or 4 other people in and she would meet the same people. She would be going in ‘come on now, we’ll be great now, we’ll get through this.’

Shane boldly opened up about losing his parents to cancer

“She was like the captain of the bus, she was important to her. She said ‘if we don’t get on the bus, the bus will stop, and if the bus stops, what about the people who don’t? It was amazing, it was very positive. She was very determined to fight him. He was a pillar, the pillar of our family. “

Shane revealed that his mother died of lung cancer and that she had a lung removed while battling the disease.

A little over 9 months passed (between their deaths), my mother died in December 2019, just before the pandemic, and my father died in October. My dad had pancreatic cancer.

“My mom and dad were able to live a very long and happy life. My mom and dad were able to see the Westlife reunion, which was very important to me, and they were able to be in Croke Park for the final concerts, they were there together, Probably it was the most special moment of my life for my parents to be there to see that, knowing my mom was sick … she was pretty sick at the time. Then three or four days after that we found out that my dad had cancer pancreas … just like that.

“That hit me like a steam train. My dad and I were very close, we were very, very close. I could talk to him about anything. The first person I would call after The Late Late Show would be my dad .. . He was like my best friend, I could talk to him about anything “.

Viewers naturally praised the star for her bravery in sharing her story.
