The father of a four-year-old girl who was allegedly the victim of an attempted kidnapping has said he fears for his daughter after the ordeal.

A man in his 30s was arrested yesterday for the alleged kidnapping of the girl in Arden View, Tullamore, Co Offaly around 6pm.

Gardaí confirmed that the investigations are ongoing, but since then the man has been released and a file will be prepared for the Director of the Public Ministry.

The girl’s father said The Irish Daily Star how he and three or four neighbors cornered the man until Gardaí arrived.

He said another girl saw her daughter being picked up by the man after trying to flee and that a fight was taking place.

“The boy turned away from him and she ran towards the girls,” said the father, who did not want to be identified.

“When I confronted him after that, I asked him what he was doing and he couldn’t explain it. Then he ran away and we chased after him.

“He ran to a house here. My friend and three or four other people went after him. He hid behind a jeep and we left him there. We cordoned it off until the guards arrived. “

The young woman does not know the man.

The father said he worries about his daughter after the alleged abduction attempt, and that she is “a bit shocked.”

“She’s fine. Look, she’s fine. She’s a little shaky, she’s fine, and she knows it,” he said.

“The guards were already talking to her. They more or less took a statement from the girl.

“I fear for her now. I lived here my whole life. I was born and raised there. Children always play here.”

The father added that this is the first time something like this has happened in the community.

“This has never happened. To be honest, it’s after sending shockwaves all over the place. Like you’re always very safe here with the kids … they’re always outside.”
