A man is being detained after Gardaí was alerted to an alleged attempted kidnapping of a minor in Co Offaly.
The suspect, who is in his 30s, allegedly approached a four-year-old girl in Tullamore on Sunday around 6 p.m.
It is understood that the boy did not know him and was observed to act suspiciously. Locals confronted the man at the Arden View estate and Gardaí were alerted by residents who believed the man may have been trying to push the boy away.
Gardaí arrived at the scene a short time later and arrested the man. He is currently being held at Tullamore Garda Station, where he can be interrogated for up to 24 hours.
The boy was not injured and the Garda investigations continue.
A Garda spokesperson said officers in Offaly “are investigating an alleged incident that took place shortly after 6 pm last night, Sunday March 21, 2021 at Arden View in Tullamore.
“A man, in his 30s, has been arrested in connection with this incident and is currently being detained at Tullamore Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
