Micheál Martin has urged the country to “continue with” a strict lockdown to prevent a fourth deadly wave of Covid.
The Taoiseach said that “we have to be vigilant” to avoid the same kind of rapid escalation that many of our EU colleagues are sadly enduring this week.
This indicates that there will be very little easing of restrictions from the next lockdown deadline day, April 5.
Martin warned the nation in a landmark interview in the Irish Mirror last month that they expected severe restrictions possibly until the end of May, and now they are sadly being enforced.
The head of government delivered a gloomy update to the nation this afternoon ahead of the latest lockdown announcements next week.
Crucial meetings between the Taoiseach, ministers, health experts and NPHET members will take place throughout this week before Mr. Martin presents the plan for the summer.
But it doesn’t look good as Covid case numbers soared again over the weekend, reaching the highest daily count in three weeks on Sunday.
Mr. Martin told Bryan Dobson on RTE’s News at One: “Your efforts have paid off…. it is extremely important that we continue with this. “
He added: “I am saying that between now and April 5, we will present a plan.”
The Taoiseach has previously indicated the areas that could see a relaxation of restrictions on April 5, outdoor activities, sport, 5lms travel limit and construction.

These remain on the table this week, but there is little to no hope that something else will be considered due to stubbornly high case numbers recently.
