An unlicensed shebeen bar was discovered in Limerick after Gardaí searched a garage next to a private home in the county under Operation Navigation, established to enforce liquor licensing laws during the pandemic.

The last shebeen found during Saturday’s search was “a fully operational unlicensed bar,” according to Gardaí.

“When Gardaí arrived there were several glasses on the tables with traces of alcohol inside. The facility was found to be equipped with a fully functioning toilet, television and dart board, ”a statement said.

“A significant amount of alcohol was seized during the operation, including six beer kegs, along with refrigeration units, four beer dispensing taps, gas regulators and optical dispensers. No people were present at the time of the search. “

Garda Headquarters, Phoenix Park, Dublin, added that investigations were underway and that “a file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecution.”

The search was carried out by gardaí on Henry Street as part of his investigations into alleged violations of liquor licensing legislation in support of existing public health measures.

The discovery of the shebeen follows other similar finds across the country since the pandemic began.

While shebeens are illegal under licensing laws, as they are not licensed and operate outside of those laws, they also violate Covid-19 regulations, which have caused most pubs and all nightclubs in the Republic to have been closed for the past year.

The shebeen discovered in Limerick had been worked on to create a bar scene, with stools, tables and bench seats, along with a bar to dispense pints and other drinks in one area.

It had been decorated in Limerick GAA colors and had a variety of mob photos and posters on the walls.
