Ireland Lockdown Updates: ‘Two Key Changes’ Expected for April 5 as Hope for Relief Emerges

The government has identified two key areas for change ahead of the big shutdown decision on April 5, it was reported.

Ireland is currently in a strict Level Five lockdown and has been under severe restrictions throughout 2021.

However, some form of relaxation is expected early next month as the public grows more and more tired of the current measures.

And now it has emerged that the government’s two key priorities ahead of the upcoming shutdown decision are the gradual return to work for construction workers and the return of outdoor sports for children, reports RTE News.

The 5km exercise limit is also expected to be extended, and this was identified last month by political leaders as an area they would seek to change in early April.

It comes after Taoiseach Micheal Martin said that he will give the Irish public an update on “how we see the development of April” before April 5.

The Fianna Fail leader added that he understands that people are “fed up” with lockdown restrictions, but would not be drawn to speculate on lifting certain measures.

Mr. Martin was responding to comments made by Deputy CMO Dr. Ronan Glynn, who said the restrictions may continue until June.

Speaking in Cork on Friday, he added: “We understand and understand that people are fed up.

“I’m not going to speculate, but we will give people clear indications before April 5 on how we see April play out and I don’t believe in speculating beyond that.”

Mr. Martin added that Covid-19 variants, such as the Kent B117 variant in the UK, as well as the Manaus, Brazil, and South African variant, were of concern as they were “more transmissible and more deadly” .

He added about the AstraZeneca vaccine, approved yesterday as “safe and effective” by the European Medical Agency, that the decision to resume its use would be made later today and the HSE was “preparing” for such a measure.

When asked if he would take the Astra Zeneca vaccine, Mr. Martin said, “Yes, I would, actually I would.”

“I hope a decision will be made on that today. We are preparing to resume that.”
