Call for ‘Kerryman’ to be renamed ‘PC nonsense’, says Healy-Rae

State Minister Josepha Madigan has defended her call to end gender titles such as “president” and “spokesperson” and argues that the title of The Kerryman newspaper should be changed to “Kerry People.”

Madigan, who is Minister of State for Special Education and Inclusion, told RTÉ Radio’s Today with Claire Byrne program that gender and language were important and said it was important not to use words that did not reflect current values.

The problem was not about a particular newspaper, it was much broader, and it was her duty as a woman politician to look around her and see what could be improved, she said in response to a suggestion from Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae that she it should focus on Covid-19.

“It is good to have this discussion,” said the minister.

Previously, Siobhán Murphy, general manager of the Kerryman newspaper, said that the newspaper’s content had changed with the times, but that there was no need to change the title that was its brand and it had been since 1904.

Mr. Healy-Rae said that Kerryman was comparable to the Bible in his home county and that local people were always eager to read it. “It plays an integral role in the community.”

The time had come to end “this political correctness nonsense,” he said. Should the name “manhole” be changed to “manhole”, he asked. He hadn’t yet heard a customer in his store complain about the newspaper headline.

When asked about the title of Woman’s Way magazine, Madigan agreed that it should also be changed.

Earlier in the Newstalk breakfast, Mr. Healy-Rae said: “What I would say to government ministers right now is, ‘For the love of God, do your job.’ We have enough reason for concern to consider the headline of The Kerryman newspaper. “
