Thousands of people will receive a share of 2 million euros in late payments from PUP this week.

The Department of Social Protection confirmed that the arrears are owed to some 6,500 people who no longer receive PUPs and “who may not be expecting a payment this week.”

A spokesperson said: “Payments will be paid directly through the post office or into the designated bank accounts of these people tomorrow, March 9.”

“The fastest way for a person who wants to verify the details of their late payments is through www.MyWelfare.ie.

“The vast majority of arrears cases (more than 280,000) were paid last December and some 38,600 received an arrears payment on February 23.”

Meanwhile, the number of people receiving pandemic unemployment pay has decreased slightly, almost 4,000 from last week.

Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys praised the national effort to reduce the number of coronavirus infections and issued an important reminder for anyone in need of financial support.

She said: “This week again we see a small but steady number of people closing their claim for Pandemic Unemployment Pay.

“I want to commend the tremendous efforts being made by people, young and old, who are paying dividends to help suppress the Covid-19 virus.

“This virus has been with us much longer than we anticipated. I know people feel tired and anxious and just want life to get back to normal.

“But our efforts are making a difference. We are seeing positive signs in terms of hospital numbers and ICU numbers, which are shrinking all the time.

“We cannot let our guard down at this time. Employees should work from home whenever possible. We must all continue to follow the health guidelines and remind ourselves that we are making these sacrifices on behalf of our families, our friends, our communities and our front-line workers. “
