There was drama in Leopardstown today, as a rider was banned for two weeks after his horse went the wrong way while leading a race.
Lake Winnipesaukee had built up a huge lead at the 5.20 TRI Equestrian Superstore & Cafe, and had to head home from the home stretch.
But with the horse advancing to the front and turning home when its rider, Aaron Fahey, took the wrong course, clinging to the chase track rather than moving onto the obstacle course at the penultimate obstacle avoided.
That left the career at the mercy of Dark Raven, with Patrick Mullins guiding Silas Marner’s 5-2 by seven and a half lengths home.
Stewards asked about the Lake Winnipesaukee race, and Fahey said that “his saddle had slipped forward, that his mount had been too strong to ride, and due to lack of energy, he was unable to steer his mount into the final corner at the correct course “.
However, the stewards decided that he had “been negligent in misjudging the correct course for this race and therefore failed to get his best possible placement” and banned Fahey for 14 days.
