Coronavirus Ireland: 566 new cases and 25 deaths confirmed by NPHET

Health officials have confirmed a further 566 COVID-19 cases in Ireland, while sadly 25 more people have died from the disease.

The death toll from the virus now stands at 4,357, while there have been 221,189 confirmed cases of the virus since the pandemic began.

Of the cases announced today, 233 are in Dublin.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronan Glynn said key disease indicators continue in a positive direction, but cautioned that there are still outbreaks in the community, including those related to extended families, workplaces and funerals.

He added: “We need to be on guard against the B117 variant of COVID-19, which we know is dominant in Ireland today and highly communicable.”

“Our willingness to follow public health advice in our daily routine has brought us the progress we can see today.

“Together, by staying home as long as possible, social distancing, hand washing, and the use of face covers, we can continue to reduce the spread of COVID-19.”

Of the cases reported today:

  • 280 are men / 284 are women
  • 68% are under 45 years of age
  • The average age is 34 years.
  • 233 in Dublin, 37 in Kildare, 30 in Meath, 25 in Donegal, 24 in Westmeath and the remaining 217 cases are distributed in all other counties.

At 8 a.m. Today, 489 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, 114 of them in the ICU.

There have been 29 additional hospitalizations in the last 24 hours.

From 28th February, 439,782 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Ireland: 297,899 people have received their first dose, while 141,883 people have received their second dose.
