Robbie Keane was on Shamrock Rovers’ bench as a volunteer coach for Sunday’s preseason friendly against Cork City.
The former Ireland striker has been volunteering with the Irish League Premier Division champions, as he has previously, working alongside his friend and former teammate Stephen McPhail and his native Tallaght teammate Stephen Bradley.
Keane has recently served as an assistant manager at Middlesbrough alongside Jonathan Woodgate, while also serving on the coaching staff during Mick McCarthy’s second stint as manager for Ireland.
Ireland’s record scorer is not expected to take on an official role with the Dublin club for this year’s SSE Airtriticy League campaign.
The FAI’s new executive director, Jonathan Hill, confirmed on Friday that Keane was still employed by the association, however, he does not hold an official position at this time.
“Robbie is still an employee of the FAI,” Hill said. “I haven’t had a chance to sit down and talk to him yet, I will. Robbie is a legend in Irish football and I look forward to having an open and honest conversation with him about the situation.”
“It hasn’t happened yet, and I’m open to all the different possibilities regarding Robbie. But Robbie will tell me where he is currently, I hope, when we get a chance to chat.”
