A man has disappeared after a small boy was rescued during a kayaking incident in Co Kildare.

Emergency services were called at the beautiful local Ardreigh Lock on the outskirts of Athy.

The alarm was raised after the man and toddler found themselves in distress after a kayak capsized in the River Barrow.

The fire service, ambulance, paramedics and garda cars were at the scene Sunday night.

In a statement, a spokesman for the gardí said: “Today, Sunday, February 28, 2021, a multi-agency search operation was carried out following reports of a kayak capsized in the Barrow River.

“A minor was rescued from the water and treated at the scene by paramedics.

“It is believed that there is still another person missing.

“The operation has stopped for tonight.”

A large crowd had gathered in the area when emergency services rushed to find the missing man.

The area is popular with walkers and families and was particularly busy in good weather.

The search has been canceled for the night.
