Hundreds of people attended an anti-lockdown protest outside St Stephen’s Green in Dublin on Saturday.

Protesters clashed with Gardaí on Grafton Street while others threw firecrackers.

The protesters were brought to the GPO on O’Connell Street, where a recording of the Proclamation was played. Several people have been arrested. Luas’s green line came to a complete stop for a while before services resumed. Services between St Stephen’s Green and O’Connell Street remain unavailable.

There was a strong Garda presence outside the park in Dublin city center on Saturday afternoon when the protest started around 2pm.

The Office of Public Works (OPW) said that St Stephen’s Green had been closed by order of the gardaí.

The OPW tweeted the closure order, adding that the move was “on the instructions of An Garda Síochána.”

Gardaí said they were operating a “police plan” in Dublin city center on Saturday afternoon.

“Currently a series of traffic diversions and other surveillance plans are being implemented. Those who are undertaking their essential journeys may encounter roadblocks on their journey and will need to take advantage of the detours, ”La Garda said on Twitter.
