Facebook prevents Australians from viewing and sharing news

FACEBOOK HAS ANNOUNCED that it has prevented Australians from viewing and sharing news on the platform due to proposed laws in the country to make digital giants pay for journalism.

Australian publishers can continue to post news content on Facebook, but the Australian public cannot view or share links and posts, the company said in a statement.

Australian users cannot share Australian or international news.

International users outside of Australia are also unable to share Australian news.

The announcement comes a day after Australia’s treasurer Josh Frydenberg described the negotiations as “very promising” between Facebook and Google with Australian media companies.

The Australian Parliament is debating proposed laws that would see the two platforms sign deals to pay for Australian news.

Both platforms have condemned the proposed laws as unworkable. Google has also threatened to remove its search engine from the country.
