Met Eireann has issued a snow and ice warning to six counties, including Dublin.
The capital, along with Kildare, Louth, Wicklow, Meath and Monaghan, could face up to 2 inches of snow in some places, the national forecaster said in a 24-hour yellow warning.
The warning, which takes effect from 6 p.m. tonight and lasts until 6 p.m. tomorrow, indicates that snow of between two and five centimeters is possible to accumulate.
The advisory is in addition to an existing advisory issued yesterday to Antrim, Armagh, Down and Tyrone, which warned of “snow showers and icy sections” in parts of the island.
Ireland is currently in the grip of another cold snap, with freezing conditions that have engulfed the county on several occasions as early as 2021.
Met Eireann last week issued a four-day weather advisory for the entire country, which is in effect from yesterday through Wednesday.
As part of the bulletin, meteorologists warned that temperatures could drop below freezing even during the day, adding that significant snowfall is sometimes possible.
Eireann’s current forecast for the remainder of today says: “Tonight will be very cold with more scattered winter rains. More snow accumulations in some places.
The eastern and northeastern counties are likely to see the most winter rains.
Lower temperatures of -3 to +1 degrees Celsius. A mild to heavy frost and icy patches will form under clear spells.
“Strong easterly winds will persist, stronger in the southwestern counties and along the shores of the Irish Sea.”
Tomorrow, according to the forecaster, “will be another very cold and windy day.
“Scattered showers of sleet and snow will continue with more snow accumulations in some places. Higher temperatures of just 1 to 3 degrees Celsius, again with an added wind chill factor due to the cool, gusty winds from the east.”
