An autopsy will be carried out on Friday after the body of a woman in her 70s was found in a burning car in Cork.
The grim discovery was made by walkers on a remote forest track in North Cork’s Doneraile area around 4.30pm on Thursday.
The woman was tragically pronounced dead at the scene after firefighters discovered her body and alerted Gardai.
Assistant State Pathologist Dr. Margot Bolster is prepared to examine the scene before the woman’s body is transferred to Cork University Hospital.
A source said: “A man carrying what is believed to be a firearm was seen walking past the car.
“The woman suffered burns. The autopsy will determine what he died of. “
A man, reportedly in his 60s and known to the woman, was rescued from the nearby Awbeg River shortly after Gardai conducted a search of the area.
It is understood that the man taken from the river is in a serious condition but not endangering his life.
The scene in the woods near Shanakilla Cross was sealed.
Detectives will wait for an autopsy on the woman’s body before determining the next step in the investigation.
The man rescued from the river is understood to be from the Limerick-Cork border area and the woman who died was from Dromihane, near Mallow.
The body remained at the scene last night waiting for assistant state pathologist Margot Bolster.
A Garda spokesperson asked the witnesses to contact them.
He said: “Around 4.30pm, Gardaí was alerted to a car that was on fire in the Doneraile area of Co. Cork.
“Gardaí discovered a body, of unknown age and gender, inside a car that was on fire.
“A search was carried out in the area and Gardaí rescued a man, also of unknown age, from a nearby river. This man is currently receiving medical attention at Cork University Hospital.
“The scene is currently preserved and the Garda Technical Office will conduct a technical examination.
“The Office of the State Pathologist has been informed and an autopsy will be performed, the results of which will determine the course of the investigation.
“Gardaí is appealing to anyone who was in the Doneraile area between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM, in particular anyone with images from mobile phones or dash cameras, to contact the Fermoy Garda station at 025-82100 or the confidential Garda line at 1800-666-111 “.
