Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has said that he has already booked his stay for the summer amid the hope that the country will reopen for sunny weather.

While the Fine Gael leader told his party Wednesday night that there will be no grand reopening on March 5, the politician is hopeful for a good summer.

Mr Varadkar said that he will be going to Sligo in August, all is well, and that Ireland will enjoy a few beers with friends outside in the summer months.

Speaking on RTE 2fm, the Tanaiste said: “I have booked my vacation home for August. [In] Sligo, I was hoping to go to a beach somewhere, it wasn’t going to be good, it will be a beach in Sligo but I was hoping to get somewhere sunny and warm. ”

Varadkar added: “I think because of the vaccine and because of the climate change and because of what everyone is doing to lower the virus, you know, I think there is a very good possibility that this summer we can have a vacation home a bit like we did on last summer, you know.

“I think we can have a few beers outside with friends this summer and tour the country, but you never know why this virus has destroyed our plans many times.”

And the Fine Gael leader still believes that nearly 80% of the adult population will be vaccinated by September despite production problems.

The Fine Gael leader added: “Due to developments in recent days, we will have to change the order of who gets what vaccine and when, but we will still have the same number of vaccines in total.”

“So that goal of vaccinating 70-80% of adults by September is still achievable. We still think it will be achieved.”
