Love Island 2021 is rumored to be the “biggest ever” as ITV bosses gear up for a long-awaited comeback this year.
According to the Daily Star, the producers are hopeful that plans can go ahead for the show to take place in Mallorca in July and August this year.
The exciting news follows a difficult 2020, during which the romance show’s summer series was postponed due to the pandemic.
However, Love Island is expected to make a triumphant return this summer with safety provisions in place.
A source who spoke to the Daily Star suggested that the producers have been inspired by other shows, such as Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing on Ice, that have been able to carry on during the pandemic.
“Everybody is ready for this to happen,” the source said.
“Strictly and Dancing on Ice have happened against all odds and they are determined that Love Island can do the same.”
According to the publication, ITV producers could also consider different approaches to filming the show from abroad.
“Producers are aware that international travel will continue to be restricted, so they have to plan for that,” the source added.
“They will probably need to quarantine all the contestants.
“They also think that they will need to fly over three times as many contestants than normal in case any of them get sick.
The source concluded: “Budget discussions are going on. It will definitely be the biggest in the history of the program.”
Last year, ITV confirmed they were planning a Love Island “bumper” series after they were forced to postpone it last year.
Instead, viewers were able to watch many spinoff series in 2020 to get their dose of romantic drama.
Last summer, a television source said: “With a huge appetite for the show, we did three Love Island specials where we catch up with some of the best-known former islanders of the last six years.
“We are also planning an excellent Love Island series for next summer.”
Details on the structure of any future series have not yet been officially confirmed.
It also remains to be seen if Laura Whitmore, who recently revealed she was pregnant, could return as a host.
