This weekend a public information campaign will begin on the launch of the Covid-19 community vaccination program for people over 70 years of age.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly confirmed that the rollout, starting first with those over 85, will begin in February.
The authorization of the Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccine by the European Commission follows.
The National Immunization Committee will meet this weekend to finalize its orientation for the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
They are expected to allow its use in people over 65 years according to the recommendation of the European Medicines Agency despite the fact that there is not enough data from vaccine trials to know precisely how effective the vaccine will be in this age group .
Minister Donnelly said that the first doses of this third vaccine will arrive in Ireland in the week starting February 8 and that it may be part of the vaccination program shortly after.
The AstraZeneca vaccine, which is easy to store and transport, is expected to be administered by GPs in the first instance.
The 81,000 people over the age of 85 will be first in line for community vaccination, followed by another 90,000 people between the ages of 80 and 84.
Donnelly said that every effort will be made to run the program as quickly and safely as possible.
