Chris Barrett has become the last May senior footballer to announce his retirement.
The defender joins teammates David Clarke, Seamus O’Shea, Tom Parsons and Donie Vaughan in retiring since the turn of the year.
The 33-year-old from Belmullet wore green and red for 13 seasons after debuting in the Allianz Football League in 2008.
All Ireland’s final loss to Dublin last December, their fourth, was the cornerback’s 47th championship game. He was one of the 12 players from Mayo nominated today for the All-Star Awards.
After a minor career that included an Ireland Under-21 win in 2006, Barrett won seven Connacht senior titles and a league crown in 2019.
He was named All Star in 2017 and was nominated a total of five times. He also represented Ireland against Australia in the International Rules Series in 2017.
Barrett said: “I feel incredibly privileged to have played alongside some of the most talented and honorable men to ever wear a Mayo jersey.
“Not to mention the management teams, support staff and our loyal fans who have been instrumental in all the good that Mayo GAA has accomplished over the past few years. Thank you to each and every one of you for a memorable trip.
“A special thanks to Beal an Mhuirthead GAA for playing an important role in my development as a player. To my co-workers at LEPD, for their understanding and help over the years. To my parents, brothers and sister: for being there in every step of the way.
“Finally, Dearbhaile and Isla. Thank you for your unwavering support and sacrifices, without which I could not have accomplished what I did.”
Mayo GAA President Liam Moffatt thanked Barrett for his “outstanding contribution and commitment to Mayo GAA” and wished him all the best for the future.
