Ireland has been placed as the second highest in the EU for the number of people vaccinated against Covid-19.

his was calculated per 100,000 people, with Denmark in first place.

The Our World Data report estimated that 1.57% of Ireland’s population has been vaccinated, while 2.23% of Denmark’s population has been vaccinated.

After Ireland is Italy with 1.5%, Spain with 1.45% and then Germany with 1.01%.

Taking to Twitter to comment on the report, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said: “Catching up. Second in the EU now for vaccines. 40k this week. It will increase to $ 50,000 next week. Thanks to all our vaccinators and @HSELive ”

According to Mr Varadkar and HSE Executive Director Paul Reid, 77,000 people have been vaccinated in Ireland so far.

Of that number, 69,378 were for frontline healthcare workers, with 7,925 for residents and staff in long-term care facilities.

The Tánaiste said that these figures will be online shortly on the Covid hub, however, at the moment they will not be updated daily and said that it could not give a date on when they will be.

He added that starting next week between 40,000 and 50,000 people will be vaccinated and that this weekly figure will likely not change until the AstraZeneca vaccine is approved and delivered to the country.

However, Mr. Varadkar said that when the AstraZeneca vaccine arrives, 100,000 to 150,000 vaccines should be given weekly.

More than 4,000 healthcare workers have already completed training to administer the vaccine, as heard Thursday at an HSE conference.

Ireland aims to vaccinate 700,000 people by the end of March and up to four million by the end of September, according to projections by Health Minister Stephen Donnelly.
