Gerry and the Pacemakers star Gerry Marsden, singer of I’ll Never Walk Alone, has died at the age of 78.

The singer of the 1960s band, who became famous on the Merseybeat scene, died after a brief illness.

The band’s hits also included Ferry Cross The Mersey, while their version of I’ll Never Walk Alone became a football anthem for Marsden’s club Liverpool.

His friend, broadcaster Pete Price, wrote on Instagram: “It is with great regret, after speaking with the family, that I have to tell you that the legendary Gerry Marsden MBE … sadly passed away.

“I am sending all the love in the world to Pauline and her family. You will never Walk alone.”

He said Marsden suffered “a brief illness that was an infection in his heart.”

You’ll Never Walk Alone enjoyed a revival during the pandemic after a cover of the song, featuring Captain Sir Tom Moore, reached number one on the UK Singles Chart.

In April this year, Marsden recorded a remake of the band’s success along with a music video, which featured Marsden and a series of messages about the NHS.

Gerry and the Pacemakers enjoyed sold-out tours around the world.

In 1962, the Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein, signed with the band, and their first three releases reached number one in 1963: How Do You Do It, I Like It, and I’ll Never Walk Alone.

The group broke up in 1967 and Marsden pursued a solo career before the band reformed in 1974 to tour the world, a tour which they later repeated.

Frankie Goes To Hollywood singer Holly Johnson, who is from Liverpool and covered the song Ferry Across The Mersey by Marsden, was among those who paid tribute.

“I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Gerry Marsden,” he wrote on Twitter.

What a Liverpool legend. I am very glad to have met you. #ferryacrossthemersey #youllneverwalkalone “

And Liverpool FC tweeted: “It is with such sadness that we learned of Gerry Marsden’s passing.

Gerry’s words will live forever with us. You will never Walk alone.”

Marsden received an MBE for his charity work in 2003.

He married his wife Pauline in 1965 and the couple had two daughters.
