Health authorities at Cork University Hospital are urging patients to contact general practitioner (GP) services outside city hours, rather than reporting to the hospital emergency department.
The hospital says it has been “exceptionally busy” today and in the last few days.
Due to increased activity in the emergency department, CUH says it is “unfortunate” that patients reporting there are likely to experience delays.
CUH says the increase in attendance is the result of “a large number of very sick medical patients requiring admission.”
In a statement issued this morning, CUH said that patient care at the hospital remained “paramount.”
“Hospital management has requested that, where appropriate, the public contact their GP / South Doc in the first instance and explore all other available options before going to the Emergency Department if their needs are not urgent,” he adds. the notice.
It is understood that there has been a marked increase in the number of Covid-19 patients admitted to CUH over the last week or so.
1,907 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in Cork in the past two weeks, although a backlog of ongoing testing means this figure may be even higher.
- For general care, CUH is directing people to South Doc.
- For urgent care, people should go to the Mercy Urgent Care Center, St Mary’s Health Campus in Gurranabraher. (Opening hours 8:00 am to 6:00 pm – Telephone – 021-4926900)
- Also available are the Local Injury Unit of Bantry General Hospital (opening hours from 8:00 am to 7:30 pm – Telephone 027 50133); and the Local Injury Unit in Mallow: General Hospital (Opening hours from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm – Telephone 022 – 58506.)
