An investigation was launched after the body of a male teenager was recovered from a river in West Belfast.

Local police have said they are “investigating the circumstances” surrounding the discovery in the early hours of the morning.

In a brief statement, they added that a 19-year-old has been arrested “as part of the investigation,” reports Belfast Live.

PSNI Detective Inspector Miskelly said: “I can confirm that the body of a male adolescent has been recovered from a river in Twinbrook, West Belfast, during the early hours of today, Tuesday January 2.”

Police added that “there are no further details at the moment.”

It is understood that while no formal identification has been made, the family of teenager Conor Kerr, who was reported missing on New Year’s Day, has been informed.

Sinn Fein MLA Órlathí Flynn offered his condolences upon the discovery.

The West Belfast MLA added: “The discovery of a man’s body in Colin’s area of ​​the city is a shock to the local community. The police investigation into the incident is ongoing and should be allowed to continue.

“My condolences go out to this man’s family and friends at this time. Anyone with information about the incident should submit it to the PSNI. “

Stephen Maginnes, a Sinn Fein councilor in the area, asked all the young people who were with Conor Kerr yesterday to come forward to help the police with their investigation.

He said: “It is important that the police know all the details of your movements yesterday.”
