Another protest over the George Nkencho shooting will take place in West Dublin tomorrow morning.

The 27-year-old died in hospital after being shot by an armed guard Wednesday in Hartstown, Co Dublin.

Gardaí said he had threatened officers and members of the public with a knife and that previous non-lethal attempts with two Tasers and pepper spray had failed to subdue the man.

Locally taken video captured the incident and appeared to show the man, suspected of holding a knife, swinging and lashing out at a nearby Gardaí, even after he was shot.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc) immediately began an investigation, as it is legally obliged to do in such situations, and attended the scene.

The man is described as having suffered significant personal problems and it is understood that he lived with his parents.

A Garda statement read: “During an incident at EuroSpar’s commercial premises in the Hartstown shopping center, a male staff member sustained facial injuries and is currently receiving medical attention at Connolly Memorial Hospital.

“A second law enforcement incident was subsequently reported at the Hartstown Mall Post Office.

“Gardaí, uniformed and unarmed, responded to the scene and observed a man in possession of a knife.

“The man continued to threaten members of the public and disarmed Gardaí with the knife.”

The statement said the Gardaí who responded followed the man on foot and in vehicles from the mall onto Manorsfields Drive, Dublin 15. The Gardaí engaged the man and encouraged him to drop the knife.

The statement said members of the Armed Support Unit arrived at the scene on Manorfields Drive, a development where the man lived with his family.

“The Armed Support Unit was also threatened with a knife and implemented a gradual response in which the use of less lethal force options (Taser and OC spray) was initially administered in an effort to resolve the incident. lethal force were unsuccessful, “he said.

“At approximately 12:35 pm, a member of the Armed Support Unit fired several shots with his official weapon and shot the man.”

He said the man was treated at the scene by paramedics from the Armed Support Unit and paramedics from the Dublin Fire Brigade, before being taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Call for calm

There have been calls for calm but also for transparency about how long the Gsoc investigation will take.

Local pastor Dare Adetuberu said Blanchardstown now needs to begin the healing process.

The protest must be peaceful so that we can concentrate and focus on the problems.

“I’m quite involved with a good job that I know the guards are doing, not just me, but a lot of people in the community.

“This is tragic, this is regrettable, this is a setback for many of us, but we must overcome it and make sure we ensure justice and continue the good work that is being done on behalf of George, who is now assassinated.” Adetuberu said .
