Motorists are advised to exercise caution after Met Éireann has issued a yellow status weather warning for tonight and tomorrow morning with temperatures dropping to minus 3 or 4 degrees.
The state broadcaster has said temperatures could be colder further offshore.
Potentially dangerous conditions are expected as widespread frost and ice are forecast.
The warning applies to the entire country and is in effect from 6 pm tonight, Saturday, until tomorrow morning at 10 am, Sunday.
There is also a small craft advisory with north to northeast winds scheduled to hit force 6 at times today and tonight on the shores from Carlingford Lough to Carnsore Point and then Roches Point.
Icy conditions follow warnings of a cold snap over the next few days.

Alan Reilly of Carlow Weather said temperatures will be well below freezing tonight.
“So a yellow warning in place tonight with frost and ice rapidly forming as temperatures drop to minus four degrees or possibly even a little lower.
“So a hard frost across the country with icy surfaces, unfortunately tonight,” he said.
Very cold tonight with lows of minus 4 to minus 2 degrees. Locally cooler inland with heavy frost and icy conditions forming early in the evening, while temperatures near the coast will remain around freezing.
Largely dry and clear with fog and pockets of fog forming in places, however light to moderate north winds will bring isolated winter rains to the north coasts by morning.
Frost and ice on untreated surfaces will take time to clear tomorrow Sunday. It will be dry in many areas with good sun and scattered showers near the shores.
Some rains will move inland in Leinster overnight and may turn winter. A bitter cold throughout the day with highs of only 1 to 4 degrees overall, with a light to moderate breeze from the northeast.
