Vaccination of healthcare workers started today at Mercy University Hospital (MUH) in Cork.

The first of its healthcare workers received the Pfizer / BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine after receiving an initial delivery of 500 doses, the first in a series of staggered deliveries of the vaccine over the next several weeks.

Mercy University Hospital CEO Sandra Daly said it was a “positive way” to start the New Year.

“Today is a day of hope and optimism for the future,” he said.

He thanked the hospital’s team of vaccinators and the scientific community “who worked so hard to make this day possible.”

“On behalf of Mercy’s staff and patients, I urge the public to continue to follow the government’s public health guidelines.

“There is still a long way to go and the best defense continues to be to limit our contacts, physical distancing, hand hygiene and the use of masks. We can all do our part to keep each other safe, ”he said.

The hospital’s clinical director and senior medicine consultant, Dr. Kieran O’Connor, was the first staff member to receive the vaccine.

Dr. O’Connor said he was “honored and delighted” to receive the first vaccine and encouraged everyone to do the same to protect themselves and their loved ones.
