The funeral of Emma McManus, daughter-in-law of Irish horse racing magnate JP McManus, who died suddenly in Barbados, will take place on the Caribbean island next Friday.
The 40-year-old mother, mother of three and daughter of former Irish tennis player and businessman Peter Ledbetter, died last Wednesday at a medical center after complaining of discomfort.
The Trinity College graduate had been preparing to celebrate New Year’s Eve with loved ones at a private residence on the grounds of the luxurious Sandy Lane resort, Barbados.
Both the McManus and Ledbetter families had flown to the eastern Caribbean island to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve together, in what has been a long-standing family tradition.
The property was bought in the late 1990s by JP McManus, financier Dermot Desmond, and horse breeder John Magnier.
Mrs. McManus is survived by her husband John and their three “adored” young children, Milly, Lauren and Annie, and “deeply mourned by her heartbroken parents and in-laws, Peter and Paula, JP and Noreen, her grandmother Veronica, siblings Juliet , Katie and Nick, ”read a funeral notice.
A funeral is scheduled at Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens, Barbados, on Friday, January 8 at 10 am local time (2 pm Irish time).
Details of an online link to a live broadcast of the funeral service will be announced on Wednesday, January 6.
Ms. McManus’s loved ones have requested “family flowers only” and have asked that “messages of condolence be expressed through cards and letters” that can be sent to Cross’s Funeral Directors, 2 Lower Gerald Griffin Street, Limerick.
No other details have been revealed.
The Royal Barbados Police are awaiting an autopsy to determine the cause of death, however a police spokesman said they had ruled out a dirty act and were treating it as a sudden death.
JP McManus pulled his horses out of all races for the foreseeable future. Its racing director, Frank Berry, told the Racing Post: “This is a very sad time for the whole family. We are not going to have riders for the next time.”
Rider Mark Walsh said his “thoughts and prayers” were with all of Ms. McManus’s friends and family.
National Hunt owner and breeder Carl Hinchy tweeted: “I have many thoughts with the McManus and Ledbetter families this morning after the shocking news reached us. RIP Emma McManus “.
“Everybody is obviously devastated, it’s hugely shocking,” said a source.
Ms. McManus was “vibrant and outgoing” and “much loved by all,” they added.
“We are especially heartbroken for John and the children, what happened is the worst nightmare of any family. John is a very compassionate guy, our hearts go out to him, ”they said.
