Approximately 1,600 kilometers of roads in County Cork were salted Wednesday night and again Thursday morning when temperatures dropped below freezing overnight.

Gardaí in Bandon warned motorists to beware of icy conditions this morning, saying “many of the roads” in the area were “very icy.”

The roads to Timoleague and the roads to Innishannon and Dunderrow were in particularly icy condition today.

“Even the road from Bandon to Macroom is also poor,” a Garda spokesperson told The Echo.

An incident also blocked the regional road (R584) between Ballylickey and Ballingeary at the Pearson Bridge and local detours were set up this morning.

In the city, approximately 240 km of road was salted with all salting routes north and south of the Lee River serviced Wednesday night.

Salting routes prioritize main traffic routes, bus routes, and other areas such as those adjacent to hospitals and schools.

A Cork City Council spokesperson told The Echo that “it currently appears there will be no requirement to re-salt the routes” with temperatures unlikely to reach the same lows overnight tonight.

The spokesperson said, however, that the winter maintenance engineer and crews are “monitoring conditions for tonight and will continue to do so until late at which point a decision will be made on whether to re-salt tonight.”

Gardaí cleared several collisions in the city this morning, but Gardaí confirmed that no injuries were reported from the collisions on Model Farm Rd and South City Link Rd.

AA Roadwatch advises drivers to use extra caution on the roads.
