The medical director has blamed Christmas socialization for the third wave of Covid-19.
Dr. Tony Holohan warned that we must take action now to curb the spread of the virus, which recorded a record 1,718 cases on Wednesday.
Speaking after Ireland entered its third total lockdown overnight, he said: “We eased restrictions in early December after the second increase the country experienced.
“We know that a substantial amount of activity took place in the days and weeks after the restrictions were eased.
“We know that the average number of contacts, which in each case we have identified, has increased dramatically to levels that we have not seen since the beginning of this pandemic.
“We are engaged in a lot of social activity throughout society, which really provided this opportunity for the virus to spread at the levels that we are seeing now.”
Dr Holohan said it is “vital” to stop the high level of transmission to keep schools open and hospital numbers as low as possible.
And he warned that every member of society has a role to play in the months ahead.
“Don’t leave home except for essential reasons,” he told RTE’s Morning Ireland.
“For essential retail, for essential work if you can’t work from home, and for exercising within 5 km of your home.

“Everybody, as much as possible, look at that, and we know that we can break these infection cycles, which are currently unsustainable.”
Dr. Holohan said that the current spread is traveling to older age groups much faster compared to the second wave.
He added that updates on the distribution of the vaccine will be available to the public, but cautioned that it will be months before it is fully distributed and that everyone should continue to follow the advice.
