The only survivor of 1976
Kingsmills Massacre is one of nearly 90 people from Northern Ireland on the New Years honors list.
Alan Black was named MBE for his services to the community in South Armagh.
World-famous pianist and conductor Barry Douglas is also listed with a CBE for services to music and community relations at NI.
Born in Belfast, Douglas had already been named OBE in 2002 honors.
NI director of social work Sean Holland has also been named CBE.
Also recognized by public service, particularly during the Covid-19 response, was DUP MLA William Humphrey, who has been named MBE.
Consultant psychiatrist Dr. Philip McGarry, who was named OBE, said he was “delighted” to accept the honor, but that it had not been anticipated.
He said the recognition was not just for “mental health as a whole, not just for psychiatrists, but for all those who work in the field” and for patients and their families.
“In recent years, it has become much more acceptable to talk about mental health,” he said.
He added that the approach and culture were different than when he had started in the 1980s.
“Now it is very acceptable for people, including men, to talk about their emotions and mental illness when at that time there was a terrible stigma.”
The sports stars are also featured in the honors, with European and Commonwealth champion Rhys McClenaghan receiving a British Empire (BEM) medal.
The 21-year-old Newtownards native became the first Irish gymnast to win a World Championship medal last year.
Mixed martial arts coach Danny Corr also receives a BEM for his services to his sport and community relations in Glengormley.
John McGuinness, a six-time North West 200 winner, becomes an MBE.
Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service Station Commander Karen McDowell has been named MBE by her fire and rescue services and the LGBTQ community.
With over 27 years of service (she joined the organization in 1993), Ms. McDowell worked in various positions and recently played a significant role in the NIFRS response to Covid-19.
McDowell said she was “very surprised and deeply honored” by the award.
“The last 10 years have been an incredible journey and if I have helped make a difference for anyone facing similar challenges, it has been a privilege to have had that opportunity,” he said.
Another MBE recipient was Amanda McNamee, Lagan Integrated College’s Director of Education Services.
“I get the most reward for working with children from different parts of the community in integrated education,” he said.
“I love working with children of different abilities and seeing the potential they have within themselves and that there is no limit to what you can do in life if you have drive and ambition.”
He added that it would be his parents who “would probably be proudest.”
