Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys has advised anyone applying for pandemic unemployment payment (PUP) to apply online as soon as possible.
Speaking tonight, Ms Humphreys said that the return to full Covid-19 level 5 restrictions as of tonight, would have a greater impact “on the economic life of the country.”
The Minister tried to remind those whose jobs are affected by the restrictions that they can benefit from income support through the PUP during the period when they are out of work.
“The decision taken today by the Government reflects the seriousness of the situation we are currently facing,” said the Minister.
“I recognize that this decision will have an impact on people’s livelihoods and that is why I want to remind people who have lost their jobs to apply for PUPs online.”
The minister said that arrangements had been made to facilitate efficient payment of the PUP early next month.
The Department says that anyone who is unemployed as of today, December 30, and who submits their application before 5 p.m. on December 31, will be able to receive a PUP payment before January 5, once they are eligible.
“Anyone diagnosed with Covid-19, or who is in isolation and is medically certified by a doctor, also has the option to apply for the Enhanced Sickness Benefit,” he added.
