Gardai appeal for witnesses when store staff were hospitalized with facial injuries in the incident that led to a fatal shooting in Dublin

Gardai has launched an appeal to witnesses to a public order incident that led to the shooting death of a man in Dublin today.

The man, in his twenties, was armed with a knife in the Hartstown shopping center and was later shot multiple times by gardai on Manorsfield Drive at Dublin 15 after failing to drop the weapon.

In an updated statement, gardai has said that a male staff member who worked at EuroSpar in the Hartstown shopping center is currently hospitalized at Connolly Memorial Hospital after receiving facial injuries.

And a second incident was reported at the nearby post office also in the Hartstown Mall.

A Garda Síochána attracts anyone
• you were at Eurospar, the post office or in the vicinity of the Hartstown shopping center at approximately 12:15 pm today, December 30, 2020, or
• who were in the vicinity of Cherryfield and Manorsfield Estates, Dublin 15 between 12 noon and 12.35 pm
• Anyone who may have CCTV or other video footage of these incidents to communicate with them.

A Garda spokesperson said: “At approximately 12:15 pm, today December 30, 2020, Gardaí responded to reports of a public order incident involving a man, in his early twenties, armed with a knife in the mall Hartstown “.

“During an incident at EuroSpar’s commercial premises in the Hartstown shopping center, a male staff member suffered facial injuries and is currently receiving medical attention at Connolly Memorial Hospital.

“A second public order incident was subsequently reported at the Hartstown Mall Post Office.

“Unarmed and uniformed Gardaí responded to the scene and observed a man in possession of a knife. The man continued to threaten members of the public and disarmed Gardaí with the knife.

“Gardai followed the man on foot and in vehicles from Hartstown Shopping Center to Manorsfields Drive, Dublin 15. During this period, Gardaí became involved with the man and encouraged him to drop the gun.

“Members of the Armed Support Unit arrived at a scene on Manorfields Drive, Dublin 15. The Armed Support Unit was also threatened with a knife and implemented a gradual response where the use of less lethal force options was initially used (Taser and OC spray) administered in an effort to resolve the incident The less lethal use of force options were unsuccessful.

“At approximately 12:35 pm, a member of the Armed Support Unit fired several shots with his official firearm, firing at the man.

“The man was treated on the spot by paramedics from the Garda Armed Support Unit and paramedics from the Dublin Fire Brigade and taken to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown.

“Man was pronounced dead at Connolly Memorial Hospital.”

They continued: “The incident was referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) under article 102 of the Garda Síochána Law of 2005.

“GSOC is investigating the fatal shooting on Manorsfields Drive.

“An Garda Síochána is investigating the incidents at the Hartstown Mall and the events leading up to Manorsfields Drive.

“A state Post Mortem will take place tomorrow, December 31, 2020 at 11 am.

Both investigations continue simultaneously in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding, the Protocols and the Agreement on operational matters between the Commission of the Ombudsman of the Garda Síochána and An Garda Síochána.
