Fulham’s game with Tottenham has been postponed following a coronavirus outbreak at the Premier League club.
The Cottagers yielded a string of positive test results on Tuesday, and after more arrived on Wednesday, the Premier League decided to cancel the game less than three hours before the scheduled 6 p.m. kickoff.
It becomes the third high-level game to be eliminated by the virus, following Newcastle’s game with Aston Villa earlier this month and Monday’s game between Everton and Manchester City.
Fulham called for the game to be suspended after more of its players felt bad, which the Premier League board sanctioned on Wednesday afternoon.
Now the entire Cottagers team will be retested.
The Premier League said in a statement: “Fulham submitted a request to the Premier League Board to reorganize the match following a significant increase in positive Covid-19 cases, as well as a number of players showing symptoms today.
“The Premier League Board has consulted its medical advisers and the decision to postpone the match has been taken as a precaution and with the health of the players and staff as a priority. The group will now be reassessed immediately.”
Despite the growing number of cases in the Premier League, the governing body says they intend to continue playing.
“With a low number of positive tests in the overwhelming majority of clubs, the Premier League continues to have full confidence in its Covid-19 protocols and in being able to continue playing our matches as scheduled,” the statement added.
“The league wishes those with Covid-19 a quick and safe recovery and will reorganize the postponed match between Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham in due course.”
Throughout Wednesday there was speculation that the game could be canceled.
Spurs coach José Mourinho expressed his frustration over the uncertainty in an Instagram post shortly after 2 p.m.
Mourinho posted on his account a video of his squad waiting for news with a message that said: “We still don’t know if we play. The best league in the world.”
The video was shot at 2.02pm, something the Portuguese made clear by showing the time in the corner of a television screen in the room.

Tottenham’s team and staff, who had gathered at the club’s nearby training base waiting for the game to start, waited more than 24 hours for clarity after reports emerged Tuesday afternoon on the Fulham situation.
The Cottagers had no dialogue with their London rivals on the matter.
Fulham said that “several club players and first-team personnel” tested positive.
They said in a statement: “The club can confirm that tonight’s away game in Tottenham Hotspur has been postponed. This is due to several club players and first team staff having positive Covid-19 test results. most recent this week.
“This decision follows discussions with the Premier League and advice from Public Health England.
“Players and staff who tested positive have been self-isolating in accordance with UK government and Premier League guidelines.
“We wish the players and staff who tested positive a quick and safe recovery.”
