A man in his 40s was killed in a tragic accident at a hunting kennel in North Cork yesterday when he was attacked and trampled by a deer.

The incident occurred in Liscarroll, Co Cork in hunting kennels belonging to the local Duhallow hunting group.

The man, named after the professional hunter Ger Withers, was feeding a pet deer, kept in kennels, in a stable when the animal suddenly reared up and attacked him.

Mr. Withers was the father of three young children, twins and a three-year-old girl.

Her friend Catherine Power said the local community has been devastated by the loss of a “wonderful, warm man, a great hunter.”

“We are all devastated, he was a fantastic man, well known and admired in the hunting community, he left behind a young wife and his children, it is a great impact for all who knew him and the family.”

A Garda spokesperson told CorkBeo that an investigation has now begun. It is believed that the accident was not discovered until after Withers did not return home.

“Gardaí attended the scene of a work accident in Liscarroll, Co. Cork on Tuesday 29 December”.

“A man, in his 40s, suffered fatal injuries. The local coroner was notified and his body was taken to the morgue at Cork University Hospital.

“The Health and Safety Authority has been notified.”

The HSA has told CorkBeo that they have been notified of the case and are working with Gardai in Charleville.
