The group behind an illegal rave that caused extensive damage to an Airbnb in Co Laois is organizing a new event for New Years Eve on social media.
The Irish Times reports that videos from the rave held in Co Laois show more than 80 people dancing without masks and without social distancing.
The rave took place at a rented property on December 12 without the knowledge of the owner. At that time, no indoor organized gatherings were allowed under Level 3 restrictions.
Lisa Wilkinson, whose partner owns the home, said those who rented the Airbnb said it was for a weekend hiking trip with coworkers.
Wilkinson said the property was “absolutely gutted” after the party, with empty beer cans and bottles, nitrous oxide “laughing gas” cans and other garbage littering the floor while the house smelled of “stale beer.”
Several mostly empty bags were also found after the event, which appeared to have been used to transport drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy pills.
Ms. Wilkinson said it took three days to clean the house, which involved “a full container” of trash.
Fully stocked bar
Co Laois’s illegal rave was organized through private social media accounts on Instagram and Snapchat.
The same group has since announced tickets for a New Years Eve rave in Dublin, an event in apparent breach of current Covid-19 restrictions.
The group is currently using an Instagram page to sell € 35 tickets to a rave at a Dublin “warehouse” with DJs and a “fully stocked bar.”

People can only view social media posts announcing the group event after they have been approved to follow the account.
People can then purchase tickets through an online link and are added to a WhatsApp group chat after showing proof of purchase.
It is a crime to organize gatherings that violate public health guidelines, and those who do so face fines or six months in prison on conviction.
An Airbnb spokesperson said it had “zero tolerance for this type of behavior and has removed the guest from the platform.”
