Met Éireann has predicted that although Friday will be a bright day, there will also be some showers and minimum temperatures of -3 to 0 degrees.
One forecaster said: “New Year’s Day will dawn cold and icy. It will be a bright day with good periods of sunshine, but also some temporary showers, possibly wintry in high ground.
“Maximum temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees with moderate winds from the north. Most areas dry out overnight with heavy frost and ice.
“However, some showers will affect the counties on the Atlantic coast and may drift towards some coastal areas in the southeast. Low temperatures of -3 to 0 degrees with moderate breezes from the north.”
New Year’s Eve will be a similar day with cold and windy winds, sunny spells, and passing rains. However, there is a risk of hail and thunder for the coastal counties.
Speaking on New Year’s Eve, the forecaster said: “Cold and windy Thursday with sunny spells and passing rains, affecting mainly the counties on the Atlantic coast with risk of hail and thunder.
“Maximum temperatures generally range between 2 and 6 degrees with cool winds from the north or northwest. Frost and ice develop again Thursday night with lower temperatures of -3 to +2 degrees.
“Many areas will be dry and clear, but the rains will affect some coastal areas of the Atlantic and may reach the shores of the Irish Sea for a time.”
Tomorrow night we will see clear spells and winter rains overnight with rains confined primarily to the western and northern coastal counties.
There will also be widespread frost and ice with minimum temperatures of -3 to 2 degrees with cool winds from the northwest.
According to Met Éireann, Saturday will bring plenty of dry and bright weather after a cold and icy start to the morning. It is expected to be mostly dry with some rains in the northern and eastern coastal areas.
