This was the surprising and promising moment when Annie Lynch, the grandmother of ten, became the FIRST person in Ireland to receive the Covid-19 vaccine.
The brave 79-year-old, who is Dublin through and through, was hit at St. James Hospital around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
An ICU nurse working in the Covid ward received the vaccine first, but Granny Annie was given the vaccine shortly thereafter, becoming the first person not working in healthcare to be vaccinated.
Annie was born in Christchurch and raised in Liberties before raising her family just a few miles down the road in Drimnagh.
Sadly, Annie’s husband, John, passed away in September this year, but he is still surrounded by his three children and grandchildren.
One of her ten grandchildren is a healthcare worker at St. James’s and was with her for an unprecedented time.
He is currently a St. James’s resident at Mercer’s Institute for Successful Aging.
After the event, Annie said: “I feel very privileged to be the first person in Ireland to receive the vaccine.
“Like everyone else, I’ve been looking forward to the vaccine and I really feel like there’s a little bit of hope now.
“It’s great that he’s here. Everything was explained to me very clearly beforehand.”
Beaumont Hospital and St. James’s in Dublin, as well as Cork University Hospital and Galway University Hospital, will begin vaccinating the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine in Ireland starting today, Tuesday, December 29.
Around 10,000 doses of the vaccine arrived on St. Stephen’s Day and Ireland was aiming to inject up to 20,000 people a week from the beginning of January.
Covid-19 Vaccination Task Force Chairman Brian MacCraith provided information on the first person vaccinated this morning.
He said: “The first person to get the vaccine in Ireland is a patient named Annie.
“She is 79 years old, born in Christchurch and raised in Liberties.
“Sadly, her husband passed away earlier this year, just four weeks before his admission in October.
“I have been told that Annie is delighted to receive the vaccine and feels very privileged to be the first person in Ireland to receive it.”
