The launch of the Covid-19 vaccine begins today in four hospitals across the country.
10,000 doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine arrived in Ireland on St. Stephen’s Day.
After three days of storage, the first of these vaccines will be administered in four acute hospitals; Dublin’s Beaumont and St James Hospitals, Cork University Hospital and Galway University Hospital.
Beamount Hospital has said that 500 doses of the vaccine will be administered at the hospital over the next few days with the exception that similar amounts will be administered at the other sites.
The government and HSE have said that the vaccination program is starting in hospital settings to build confidence before the vaccine is rolled out to the country’s more than 580 nursing homes starting next Monday.
Tanaist Leo Varadkar said 40,000 vaccines a week are expected to be delivered in January.
That will vaccinate 3% of the population with the program increasing as more vaccines become available in February and March.
